[at-l] OT: Environmental associations

No arguments from me.

For me the questions (which I can answer) are what are they actually "doing"
and how "much" of their income is spent doing it. How "well" they are doing
it is much harder to get my mind around.

A frame of reference I use is to look at groups' primary function/activity and
then decide what activity I want to support. Then I go to one of the public
sites which show what % is the money each group takes in actually goes to that
activity.

For example, I divide Environmental groups into areas such as advocacy (of
various types issues), watchdog, habitat set aside (of various types), etc.
Of course there are other way to divide the groups up and as always YMMV.

Then I decide on supporting "x" approach within the overall effort and check
out where the best bang for the buck is being reported.

If you know a Federal Employee, they should have a major resource in the CFC
(Combined Federal Campaign) booklet for payroll deduction for charities. It
gives a thumbnail sketch of each charity's focus and the % of funds spent
directly on that work. There are also web sites that have similar
information.
