Jim O. has provided us with a very interesting, persusive, and sophisticated analysis. 

Personally, I always thought that the first growth of backpacking in the 70s was the result of the original television generation, who missed ordinary childhood activities sitting in front of television screens, finally experiencing belated childhoods.

I'm somewhat optimistic that the computer game, gameboy, obese, cell phone generations will likewise sometime find a belated childhood on the trails.

We'll just have to wait and watch.
