[at-l] SW-KY hiking...
As a fourth generation Cairoite (my great-grandfather was Cairo's first paid fire chief)
kay-ro is okay if you're talking about Cairo, Georgia
If you're talking about Cairo, Illinois,
it's really
Care-o
To make it hiking related, you can actually hike the levees all the way around Cairo; it sits in a bowl (think New Orleans), surrounded on all sides by earthen levees. The Boy Scouts used to string them way out into Alexander County to make a 50-mile hike.

Right, and pronounced: "kay-ro", not "Kye-ro", right? And with a big concrete steamship-shaped pavilion right at the junction, too!
