I read a register entry this past weekend from Pittsburg(h) stating he
was wheeling the trail. Just curious how far you are going and what
you are going to do with the info you get. How close are your results
to the "official" distances?

Pittsburgh responds:

I am working on a project that has been in my head for many years;
measuring the trail in Georgia. This is in preparation for a book
about hiking the AT in Georgia. Publication date is unknown. Anyone
wishing to hike along while I measure (I do this on Sundays and
Mondays), you are welcome, as is your vehicle. With two vehicles, I do
not have to hike out and back...

What are the results? I have measured now from Springer Mountain to
Woody Gap. The Databook has Woody Gap at milepost 19.9, my
measurements have Woody Gap at milepost 20.8. There have been a number
of relocations to the trail in Georgia in the last decade (north of
Springer to differentiate from the BMT, from Long Creek Falls to
Hickory Flatts, for the new Gooch Mtn shelter, Dan Gap north of Woody
Gap, new climb up Blood Mountain), but if you look at Databooks over
these years, the trail mileage has rarely changed. The Databook is
compiled from data supplied by the trail clubs (the trail clubs are the
agencies responsible for proper mileages). Georgia does not have
proper mileages in the Databook...

You may ask, "So what if the mileages are off?" Well, it bugs me to no
end...
