Yesterday's New York Times had an article on the history of the "EV"
car. These were the purely electric vehicles designed by GM in order to
satisfy California emissions requirements. The article was worth reading for those
interested in no-emission technology.
The most interesting thing mentioned was that each car cost GM
$100,000 to manufacture and was sold at a loss for $42,000 per vehicle. The buyers
were mostly wealthy Californians interested in no emission car promotion. The
retail price was approximately double that of a hybrid vehicle.
GM has since gotten the government to relax electric vehicle
development requirements. Most of these "EV" cars were taken back by GM and
disassembled. One woman owner was arrested and fined for chaining herself to the
entrance gate of the facility where the cars were being taken...
