Mindlessly, throwing a couple shirts, another pair of jeans, a swimsuit, etc 
in a small bag excepted; most of the time I am packing a suitcase it is to go 
somewhere to do something that is not all that much fun, not high on my list 
of things I really want to do, etc.

OTOH, packing a backpack is ....

For me, packing a suitcase tends to be part of a process where I have to plan 
for, worry about others -- their needs, desires, etc

OTOH as a primarily solo hiker, packing a backpack is ....
