What the "average" person does not realize, until too late, is that one 
must be prepared to fend for themselves for 48 hours to two weeks after 
a catastrophe.  Even then, resources are stretched thin and/or nonexistent.

That's not to say my heart does not go out to those trapped in this 
tragedy.  Just the reality is, losses abound on every side.  Will we as 
a nation learn any lessons?
