I was in a place yesterday where two TVs were running side by side. One was
on CNN with all the news of the catastrophe named Katrina, the other was
running "King of the Hill", a cartoon show for adults. Life goes on.

Today I was painting the trim around two windows on the front of my house
while thinking about Shane who doesn't know if his house has a roof any
more. Later I watched reports on TV where people are going berserk in New
Orleans and shooting at the people trying to rescue them so that some
agencies don't dare go in to help while other victims are asking where is
the government? Why aren't we getting any help?

Those trapped in the midst of all this don't have access to the news media
of course. They only see the destruction around them and have no way of
knowing that the emergency services are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the
problem. OTOH this scenario has been forecast for years. They showed clips
of all the times that people have tried to get the levees reinforced only
to have the money go elsewhere.

It hurts but I have no choice. I must accept that like 9/11/2001, our
corner of the world has changed again and will never be quite the same.
