[at-l] re:Hiking the Appalachian Tral--raw water

Circa 1972 I went to a Wyoming dude ranch with no electricity except when they fired up the generator. Our first afternoon at the ranch, we went on a trailride. After about an hour, our guide told us to get dismount for a little break. He tied up his horse and strolled over to the stream, where he drank the water from his cupped hands. At the time I had never had a drink directly from a stream. I followed his lead, quenching my own thirst with the icy snow-melt stream. I later learned that the ranch's water source was from a damned stream a little higher than the ranch. Since then I've had unfiltered water from piped springs on the AT, filtered water from a tiny, cow patty spotted stream in Grayson Highlands, and filtered water from some pretty questionable ponds in the Ocala National Forest. None of it tastes as good as that what comes from Meadow Creek in the Bridger National Forest!

When I was a kid, I'd just scoop up water and drink it wherever we were. Backwoods Michigan, backwoods Pennsylvania.. if we were in the middle of nowhere, I was fine with it. My mother, however, was aghast and sure I'd get sick.
