What I heard through the Forest Service grapevine (which is probably old
news to many of you, but hasn't been posted yet) is that the area is slated
for wilderness designation and they wanted to replace Goddard Shelter as
fast as possible, because they wouldn't have been able to do it like this
after the change-over. The logs supporting the structure are apparently
severely rotted, even though the shelter is only about 17 years old.

As usual, the government's idea of environmental restrictions is
making it harder on AT volunteers while paving the road for Plum Creek and other
near-Trail developments.
Anybody else seeing what's wrong with the picture here?
