A speech Baxter wrote in 1967 for the dedication of the Togue Pond Gate
House told of how he first saw Katahdin in 1903 "while on a fishing trip
with my late father." He was 26.

While Baxter didn't purchase the land around Mt. Katahdin until 1930, he
became involved in politics in 1905. He was a very strong conservationist
even then, and was also concerned with taking care of the poor and animals.
He was a leader in all these areas.

MacKaye was 4 years younger, and didn't write his Project in Regional
Planning article until 1921.
