Wholly Shi'ite, Bob. Someone changes the ODIOUS subject, and you home RIGHT BACK IN ON IT.
I won't say what the most fun I've had on the trail was, 'cause this here is a family list.
Anyway, it wasn't technically ON the trail in any case...

Señor "Roks 'n Roots"...IOW, the A.T. is a *recreational* footpath.
As in, it's a footpath that *re-creates* a wilderness experience, by preserving some areas in a relatively natural state.
I daresay there's nothing hidden about your agenda, dear sir, but one might say it's a wee tad naive.
(Not that there's anything WRONG with that...)

OK, I'll bite. In 100 words or less, what then IS the trail's purpose, other than a recreational footpath?

Wilderness immersion and the conservation awareness derived from it.
The "AT wilderness mechanism".
Appalachian conservation for the purpose of establishing a counter to total sprawl.
Literally, the preserved biosphere gotten from this greenway.
Yes, they will develop it all unless stopped.
There are some so ruled by a narrow and restricting personal politic that they call this a "hidden agenda" and seek to excommunicate AT members who promote it.

Pilgrims Progress because Chronicles of Narnia, even in paperback, is too heavy. It's a book you can read over and over again.
