BUT, if speed hiking is a HYOH, then why the commercial support?  Why the website?  Why tell anyone?

They tell because THEY want the recognition.  "MY" product helped this lad beat the old AT speed-hike record, so Use My Product and You Too can be a Speed Hiker.

  I favor NOT doing very much to publicize nor give awards of any kind for any
  particular kind of hike--except maybe jail time for truly antisocial hiking.
