Jim O. says that carrying a cell phone WILL affect a hiker's experience.  He didn't say it would negatively affect their experience, just that it will be affected.  If you're among those who have loved ones at home who still care for you, those that you want to put at ease during your hike, then your hike might be POSITIVELY affected by it.
 
For the most part, you don't necessarily need a phone.  Pretty frequent communication can come through pay or motel phones in towns.  If you're running from something, or someone, you certainly don't need a cell.
