No, there's no need to bring Hitler into it.

The interstate system was sold to Congress
as the "National System of Interstate and
Defense Highways" by the Eisenhower
administration.

Funny how we're always ready to throw
money at "defense."  But in this case,
putting "defense" into the name was how
it got sold and funded.
