Several million people walk on the AT every year.
I've heard estimates from 3 million to 6 million.

And this is as it should be. It was designed to be
"maximally" accessible to the inhabitants of
America's east coast sprawl.

This becomes evident as you walk across the
Hudson River on the Bear Mountain Bridge and
gaze south at the New York City skyline (and if
not from the bridge, from any of several ridges
nearby.)

Crowds on the AT happen rarely. You want
to thru-hike without crowds, leave from Springer
well before mid-March or April.

The trail is nearly 80 years old. America's
attention span is about fifteen minutes. One
movie won't change a thing. (And Bryson
himself makes a similar point in his book.)
