This sounds like the actions of children.  Perhaps some parent will  notice 
the knife or it will turn up in school or some other venue.  Make up  some 
posters and circulate them to neighbors who have children or  grandchildren.  
Alert the schools in the area.  I am sure that you  have already given the police 
a report of missing items.  
 
With all of the sentimental feelings that surround this knife it is  
difficult to deal with the loss.  The thoughts that you carry within will  keep your 
father's presence with you when you hike.
