[at-l] Indoor wildlife surprise
Cottonmouths/water moccasins are a southeastern snake species - but they
aren't very common. They tend to stay near the water and love to sunbathe.
Their cousin the copperhead looks a lot like the cottonmouth - but usually
don't hang out as close to the water (and there are banding differences -
particularly when the snakes are young). If you hike in the Cohutta this
summer, you *will* see both types.
However, you will see more water snakes (usually the brown kind) than
anything. They *look* like copperheads or cottonmouths and can imitate
them - they like to sunbathe and hang from trees and they can be quite
tenacious - but they aren't venomous. More of them are killed every year
than copperheads or cottonmouths because they are often mistaken for them.

2 years ago I had a baby cottonmouth nestled in the inside crevase of my
storm door, attempting to get into the house. Like a fool "don't try this at
home" I attempted to pick him (her?) up in the style of the Croc Hunter and
nearly got myself bit. It wiggled away, needless to say. Haven't seen
another one. They do live here, even if all the "books" and the Ga Extension
Service say 'no they don't.' I have a neighbor who's seen a lot of them in
the swampy area near her house.
