What I DID say (some time or another) is that I agree that if some authority
might be liable, they are correct in requiring certification and the wearing of
safety gear.  Beyond that, if the VOLUNTEER worker (and a few who get paid)
believe that the work would be easier or quicker using modern equipment of any
kind it should be up to them to decide when, where and whether to use it.

If a maintainer (in Maine?) wants to work in the winter that's up to him.  In
Florida that's likely the best time to work.

What is "mindless" and "robotic" (as I also said) is a complete ban just
because someone somewhere might be annoyed that they can hear a chainsaw in the
forest.  

If the sound of someone making your hike possible annoys you, you should
realize that you are not the center of the world and that those maintenance
workers are not your servants.

When I start off my part of a discussion with the words "respect labor" you
should expect a rant.  Don't get me started on cigarette butts!!
