She can beat some of the bugs just by starting slightly later, say the end
of June instead of mid June. Then the bugs also give incentive to get your
miles in too, you don't take some many breaks and the bugs don't bother you
as much when you're moving <g> (try doing trail work in bug season, when
you're a stationary target).
As Weary said she won't be hiking alone, lot's of other hikers out and
about at that point. She's heading out on a grand adventure!
