[at-l] Sun Beam?

Yesterday, as I left for work just before 5:30 in the morning, the pre-dawn
sun was casting a "beam" straight up from the horizon. At first it looked
almost like a rainbow, at least in width, but with no colors and of course
(as I final realized) no arc. The beam covered a good distance across the
sky, and lasted about 20 minutes. Does anyone know what I was seeing and
what it's called?
