The mother of all side trails to the AT just happens to be in the southern
half -- the 252 mile Tuscarora.
See: http://www.patc.net/hiking/destinations/tuscarora/
There are 40-some side trails in the SNP alone, plus all the trails which link
to those trails which link to the AT -- e.g., the Massanutten and Great North
Mountain link to the Tuscarora.
See: http://www.patc.net/hiking/destinations/massanuttenring.html

I would like to take the time to hike some side trails on the southern
half of the AT, and would like to know which y'all would recommend.
