A trail-maintaining thruhiker friend of mine tells a tale of having a great 
horned owl killing a rabbit on a pine limb just a couple feet above his tent 
one night.

I can't do the tale justice, but you well get the idea, if you have ever heard 
a rabbit's death scream, coupled it with the sight of a great horned flushing 
at about eye level, as you burst from your tent on a moonlit night.

BTW -- IMHO a bobcats child/woman cry/scream is far more hair standing than a 
screech owl.
