After Percival Baxter planned a park to prevent development of New England's
most outstanding Mountain, Ben MacKaye was planning building farms, asylums,
hotels, power generating dams, networks of roads and railroads, and even lumber
mills to support week long excursions in the woods for tens of thousands of
city dwellers. It is obvious MacKaye wasn't influenced by Baxter, but it is a
good thing the Trail was built by Avery after MacKaye's original plans were
dismissed by the first ATC.
