[at-l] Re: Hiking Poles - which and why?

Years ago I had a number of bamboo walking stick about the size you mentioned.
Long exposure to the weather was not a problem.

Wear was. They got noticeably shorter, as I hiked.

Back then, I delayed the process, with a wrap of light gage steel wire caped
with a rubber cane tip. Where I to use one today, I think I would try capping
the end with a bit of one of the epoxy putties.

IMHO, bamboo tends to be a tad slick, when wet. So, I wrapped the top six
inches, or so, with sports tape -- the type you use to wrap lacrosse sticks,
hockey sticks, etc.

Ditto ornamental vs. structural bamboo, BTW.

I'm not sure how well
it would take weather on a thru-hike. Be aware that the ornamental bamboo
grown in this country is not the same as the bamboo the Japanese use
structurally.
