[at-l] Good Advice for Digital Camera Newbees

> Multiple editing of the same file will mangle your image.

Mangle isn't quite the right word. It mostly reduces the resolution rather
than scrambling the file or worse. This is because most images are saved in
JPEG format and that is a lossy format so each time it is saved the image is
degraded. Note that this is even true of simple manipulations like rotating
a landscape image to portrait although there are programs that know how to
do that without damaging the image by manipulating only the file headers and
not the image bits. Most of these problems can also be avoided by storing
the images in TIFF format which is lossless but takes up more room on the
disk. RAW format is even better if it is available on your camera as that
avoids the processing done on the camera which may do white balancing,
sharpening or other manipulations before giving you the result as a JPEG. If
you have the skills you can usually do better than the wimpy processor in
the camera. Given a raw image you can even buy very fancy/expensive programs
that know about lens distortions for specific len/camera combinations and
correct them.
