GaDawg made comments about her roommate that must be answered!
I understand that the roommate was a snot-nosed bag-pipe of snoring misery,
who made her sparse sleep even more uncomfortable and meager. At least I
never heard the roommate, but I did hear her complaints.
I even visited the bacchanalian events in the dungeon room of Cottage C.
Children even witnessed the debauchery of normally chaste and mature adults
breaking into Louie-Louie. I hope that psychotherapy skills improve
adequately to help those innocent children.
Pittsburg makes some comments about the numbers and the need for a more
organized SORUCK.
Indeed, he is correct if we are to continue with a growing popular
movement. My concern is whether an organized RUCK adequately serves those
that the RUCK was designed for - the newbie and the planner. Currently, I
suspect we are creating another Gathering/TrailDays/TrailFest event that
may lose the small relaxed non-cliqued event previously strived for.
I wonder if success will kill the SORUCK as we know it. I am not sure that
such a change isn't a good idea, if it allows more opportunity for reviews
of new DVD's - perhaps becoming the film festival of the trail set. It may
allow for more broad communications among the various "hot-stove leagues"
of our cyber-hiking world.
But if this is the case, I suspect that we may have to bite a bitter pill
that we will need event planning that will cost money and time. We might
even benefit from more professional management of our feeding frenzy - at
least to assure food safety and that our volunteers get to enjoy food and
the presentations.
As good as NOC was (and it was fabulous), we might want to allow
neighboring venues to compete for our business. I prefer NOC, by the way.
But, Fontana Village, Tremont (in the Smokies near Townsend), Lake
Junaluska (east of Waynesville, NC) and others might be appropriate for our
needs as we grow. It may be time to begin planning for another regional
RUCK, perhaps in Conneticutt or Massachesetts - between MLK weekend and
SuperBowl.
BTW, Sly, Miss Janet and Pittsburg did a terrific job on extremely short
notice and deserve our gratitude and support. I understand they had to
share the same salary of the prior organizers (zero plus their seed money
up front). I hope to avoid burning them out, as has occurred with other
RUCKmeisters.
