[at-l] SORUCK returnee

I've just gotten back from the SORUCK at NOC, and dropped off a newbie
hiker at the airport for her return to South Florida.

The facility was fabulous, with lots of room, social space, hiking, gear
shopping, Tuckerization (this AM for the newbie) and eating. I didn't
attend nearly as much I would have wished due to a pretty bad cold, and
plan to get back to bed real soon.

We had a hike Saturday AM from Tellico Gap down to NOC. Some fairly flew
down the hill, while others had an awakening how different mountains are
from coastal areas. There was marvelous fellowship and camaraderie, with no
cell phone usage detected.

This RUCK has continued to grow, although I never attempted to count. I
wouldn't surprised that we had over 100 Saturday afternoon between the day
visitors and the full time RUCKsters. The gear shop was thrilled to offer
us some great deals, extending their after Christmas sales when they
wouldn't have had much business. We shared the facility with some EMT's in
training, welcoming them to our food and fellowship.

If there is a suggestion for next year, we need to make it a bit easier for
those who prepare food to get fed. This might include closing the kitchen
at a set time rather than allowing stragglers to keep our volunteers
working like galley slaves. GaDawg made terrific meat loaf but got to eat
very little, for instance.

I hope we get to return to this facility over the next few years. I hope we
can figure out a way to get the RUCKs publicized via the ATC as a way to
get the newbies aware of these resources.

Bill...
<a tip of the hat Miss Janet, Barb (Mrs Pittsy) and others for today's
terrific breakfast! I hate to make specific shout-outs, because so many did
so much.>
