[at-l] Frank thinks he knows me...

>"...As far as any excess funds the ATC may have at the end of the fiscal year,
I'd rather see if used on education for our youth, to fund troubled youth
programs, to buy much needed tools for the supporting clubs, make donations
to hostels for upkeep and improving hiker accommodations, etc, etc, etc. ?I
mean, there has really got to be some better way to "dispose" of those funds
rather than using it to research whether or not we need to change the name.
'Course that's just my opinion."

There are never any "excess" funds at the end of a fiscal year for any group dealing with environmental protection. There always is far more that needs to be done than there are means.

The name change was a tiny part of a massive ATC planning effort conducted to see if there might be a better way to make limited funds accomplish more. I participated marginally in the effort, having been part of a three day retreat held in West Virginia a year of so ago to get views from a broad range of people in the Appalachian Trail community.

Being a conservative liberal, i.e. one who hates to see old things change, I had misgivings about the name change. (Yes. One can be both conservative and liberal. Just as Washington these days can be peopled with radical conservatives.)

But gradually I'm coming to agree with RnR that the change is for the better.

I'm hopeful that the more important changes dealing with staffing, board membership, and organizational structure will also be beneficial. We can only wait and see.
