Before we cast any stones among friends,
I want to say Roks has greatly brightened MY days with his keen
observations of the natural world around him, be it alligators,
Florida flora or mockingbirds.

This wasn't an either/or comment, my original observations. We are ALL
guilty fo negativity, being human, and we are ALL capable of making
the choice to be happy. If anyone can tumble to this, hikers can.
Unless, of course, one secretly believes that happiness comes from
circumstances "out there."

Remember the portion of the original quote?
"It is the exercise, moment to moment, of free will, of doggedly
looking for beauty, joy, and possibility, that offers us the greatest
hope for generating stories that will contain the creativity and
inspiration we need to solve otherwise insurmountable challenges."
   -- Nina Utne, UTNE Reader, May-June 2004, page 6

I LOVE that word, "doggedly." I like it so much I'll say it agian:
"of DOGGEDLY looking for beauty, joy, and possibility...." making it a
way of life.

If you've even seen the little-known Spielberg film "Joe Vs. The
Vocanoe," recall the delightful scene of all those grey, soulless,
spirit-stomped human sheep marchiing across the grey concrete of their
plant, going to work their juicless jobs in the morning, unsmiling,
beaten into submission.
It is Worker Joe who stoops to observe a fresh daisy that has popped
up from the crack overnight. (Of course an oncoming worker, ignorant
and oblivious, proceeds to step on it).
It is Joe, and only Joe, who eventually escapes the safety of the
sheep shed - or cow pasture or whatever you want to call the force of
fear that locks us into leading juiceless, meaningless lives - and
gets out and really lives and experiences and feels grateful for his
life.

There is a magificent scene of the moon rising over the endless ocean,
when all is lost and Joe is marooned with his unconscious love
interest. What's his "reality"? Hopless lost at sea, with no hope of
rescue. What is his "inner landscape?"
Utterly lost in awe, he drops to his knees and speaks aloud his
gratitude for his life. THAT's "juice." Do we want to go down sobbing
with regret, or sobbing with joy?
That is what I am talking about.

And so I must return to my daily toils and enterprises, plotting my
escape from the cow pasture. Goal: retirement in two years! Financial
freedom!

Go all you "Joes" out there (and we ALL have an "inner Joe")
