That's an interesting idea, Sly. Only problems I can think
of are the oppressive drought and lack of cover in western
Arizona, Nevada, and east of the Sierras in California,
along with the issue of where and how to cross the Colorado
River and circumvent Vegas and Area 51. Water sources are
hard enough to come by for a cyclist in this region,
(Medford OR - Las Vegas NV, 2000) let alone a hiker covering
1/4 the daily mileage. Caching would be an essential
component of the experience. Oh yeah, and Mt Whitney isn't
really west of the Gila-Tortilla Trail. It's considerably
further north.

The Gila-Tortilla Trail will surprise people. It's very
well-watered, highly scenic and passes through a great
diversity of unusual landscapes unseen practically by all.
What's more, you can hike it "in season" and still never
have to worry about crowds! Ever!!
