"Hiking from Springer to Fontana" seminar at the SORUCK...
For any thru-hiker candidate that is planning on doing a traditional
Springer Mountain start, getting through the first 163 miles can be
heaven, or hell. You will quickly realize that:
* the trail is not flat or paved (like the high school running track
that you have been walking on every day for the past year)...
* all of your preparation has proven quite useless (the schedule that
you mailed all of your friends and relatives is now only useful as
toilet paper)...
* you are carrying too much weight (way too much food, too many
clothes, all of those extra batteries, and what's up with that
machete)...
* your goals need to be daily goals, or even hourly goals (Katahdin
should not enter your vocabulary)...
* the hike is more a mental challenge, than a physical one (the pain is
tolerable, it is the emotional roller coaster that will drive you from
the trail)...
Pittsburgh will host this seminar, along with a number of other (as yet
to be determined) experienced AT hikers. All seminar/presentation
times will be posted in Kleinrath Hall at the SORUCK...
Pittsburgh and family
