I know what you mean about hating November, Kel. While at the Women Hiker's
Fall Fling in Erwin a couple of weekends ago, I about burst into tears at
the breakfast table. See, we had lost both of my Grandmothers in 1996.
(That was a really rough year on the family.) And, the fall tends to bring
out a melancholy in me.

While sitting around eating breakfast at Miss Janet's, we had to answer a
few questions such as: 1) Real name; 2) Trail name; 3) Something no one
else knows about us; and 4) If we could have anyone at all to hike with
us,who would they be and which trail would you take?

The vision of both of my Grandmothers instantly came to mind. They were two
tough old birds that had not had easy lives, but they were rich in their
love for their families. When it came my turn...I croaked out that I wanted
both of my Grandmothers... I think that maybe they were the ones that
really started this itch that I have for being out in the woods. Often, I
would get volunteered to go out huntin' poke salad, blackberries, or ginseng
(among other herbs, flowers, and plants) with them. Man...what I wouldn't
give right now to get "volunteered" to go out in the woods with them one
more time.
