Trail Crews - was Perspective, was Trail closures -- Was [at-l] FLA Trail reopens

This was my first year on crew, and I would highly recommend it. I'll be going back next year. It definitely made me appreciate the trail and what goes into it a little more. There is info on the ATC website at http://www.appalachiantrail.org/volunteer/crews.html
I believe many other trails and areas have similar programs. I'm currently investigating the Ozark Highlands Trail Association, which is a l;ittle closer to home for me...

One of the local horse clubs has teamed with ATC and the park service and provided an invaluable service packing a lot (almost all) of our food and equipment up the mountain for us. They also routinely help with trail maintenance. Is this happening in other areas as well?

Bradley,
I'd actually signed on to one of those crews the summer before my
thruhike. It seemed like a very unitive effort to meet a common
problem, and I wanted to support it, as well as spend some quality
time in the Smokies..
Now that I think of it, I might sign up again.
