There is a logic behind a penalty for attempted suicide. Often, the general
public is endangered or severely inconvenienced. For instance, the driver
who aims for a truck. The bridge jumper who stops traffic for hours as
authorities attempt to save him. The building jumper who injures a fireman
attempting to grab him. The children who witness or discover the shooting.
The penalty serves primarily to enforce continued treatment following the
voluntary or involuntary hospitalization - assuming that the survivor has
access to such care. Frequently, prosecution is pointless and abandoned.
