Have you read any of Calvin Rutstrum's books?  He was an outdoorsman of the old school, too.

The one I read first was Chips from a Wilderness Log.  He was not a pack-light sort of person, but it's wonderful to read what he has to say.  

Richard Proenneke, of whom you were speaking earlier, hasn't been dead long.  According to http://www.minifarmhomestead.com/outdoors/richardproenneke.htm
he died in 2003.  They seem to be sort of the same type of people.  They'd have gotten along just fine.
