Start by joining the Appalachian Trail Conference and ordering their basic AT hikers packet. The packet is free, if I remember right. Dues are $30, $25 if you are under 18, over 65, or a member of a local maintaining group. 

ATC sells numerous books dealing with hiking the trail, plus trail maps and guides to help with your planning. Member discounts for these materials plus discounts at several hostels along the trail will more than compensate for the cost of a membership. Plus a membership provides you with that nice feeling of being a part of the organization that made the trail possible.

Also useful are numerous Internet sites like www.trailplace.com ; www.WhiteBlaze.net ; and http://www.aldha.org/.
