One of the benefits of life in the big city is that "wheels" are not owned.
We use Public Transportation to wherever we go. The AT has a Metro-North
(rail line) stop. Various bus lines go to the AT at Harriman, Warwick and DWG.
Wheels are a luxury that we have given up except on occasion when we rent a car
from Avis or some other car rental company in order to go West to East in New
England. Funny how all the public transportation lines go North/South
(except on the LIRR where they go East/West and a lot of zigzagging has to take
place to go north or south).

French places are good (we have four in our immediate area) but here in NYC I
would recommend a couple of Swedish places (Ulrika's on 60th St. and Aquavit
on W. 54th St.). Italian places abound and everyone is someone's favorite.
We have three within a two block limit. We also have the best Pizza place in
the city (now dem's fightin' words). Oh, Thai, Chinese, Irish Pubs, Greek,
Vietnamese, and others abound within walking distance (and I am not talking long
distance hiking here). There are some restaurants that are non-ethnic
oriented -- Fish places, steak,
Bar-B-Que, etc., and if one wishes to immerse oneself in an ethnic region
then a subway ride to Greenpoint Brooklyn gives Polish food, a Subway to Astoria
(Queens) gives a multitude of Greek Tavernas, a long subway ride to Brighton
Beach (Brooklyn) will place one in Little Russia, while a trip on the # 7 Line
to Flushing will place a person in the largest Asian Community outside of Asia
with various food delights.

Oh, how can I leave NY to go on the AT? Well, I am an odd guy and I happen
to like trail food. Lipton, Ramen, or whatever -- I love it. However, my mate
will not allow that stuff in the house. Well, I could store it in my pack
and enjoy it from time to time. Anyway, while in NYC I follow the Atkins Eating
Plan and on the Trail I eat Carbs. (Please don't flame me on my diet choices
-- HYOH.)
