Where were you three years ago right now?
Three years ago today, I was home in SC. I was in my bedroom, watching the
TV & talking to my wife at her office, telling her about the towers.
One year ago today. September 11, 2003
Baxter Peak
... "Wench & I seemed to fly up the mountain and across the table lands. The
table lands are a huge flat section of the mountain, flat like a table top.
We walked about 1 mile over this then up a steepish pitch with rock steps up
to the top & along a ridge to Baxter Peak. We saw people gathered around the
Peak sign as we were climbing to the top. So many people realizing a dream,
others enjoying a day hike, all caught up in the excitement of the moment,
alone in their thoughts. The end was in sight for us (I started to tear up a
little, wishing my father was alive to see this), we walked up to touch the
sign, then join the others and complete this stage of our journey. This won?t be
the last crazy thing I do? I found that the being a little ?out there? is
where I belong? I don?t fit in a normal world, and it?s nice to have friends
that understand that & share my dreams. We watched the people at the peak,
posing on the Katahdin sign, taking pictures, some watching, some cheering
each other on , then finally it was our turn. We walked up & had our own time at
the sign, Wench & I alone in our own thoughts for a moment before doing our
celebrating. Cameras were clicking away, as we celebrated our moment with
each other and then with all the friends around us. Laughter, Tears,
Champagne, snacks, the party went on around us for about an hour. Many touching
moments took place. Teds flag flew on Katahdin, proud & true? A celebration of Teds
life and a fulfillment of his dream (to take the flag from Springer to
Katahdin, and have it fly there on September 11th). Ted had made it in spirit from
Georgia to Maine, in the hearts of all of us. Many people on the mountain
that day were celebrating life, others were remembering lost loved ones in
personal moments."...
It was an emotional time, made more so because it was September 11th. A day
to celebrate being alive, and a time to remember those that gave so much so
that we could be free to follow our dreams.
