OT - Re: [at-l] Glad this guy is not a hiker - gun story

Just a small reality check. The guys mistake was that he tried to comfort the animals he was killing by holding them in his arms. Millions of unwanted animals are killed every year in this country. I don't know about other states but it is not easy to get rid of unwanted animals in Maine. I once inherited five feral kittens. I tried to give them to our local humane society and was told it was out of space, but that they would call when they had room. Six years later they still have not called.

I caught four of the kittens and paid a vet $150 each to have them killed, "humanely." One escaped and produced more kittens. I spent another $500 or so to have her ofspring disposed of and another thousand having its second crop of babies "fixed."

I've tamed some of the kittens over the years and given them away. One I tamed never did find a home. It in the chair behind me now. But I continue to feed eight feral cats, buying 18 pounds of catfood every week or so. Four are fixed at a cost of about $600. One is the same ancient mother, minus tail from an auto accident. Three are three month old kittens that I cant catch and can't really afford to do much about them even if I could catch them.

Many times I've been tempted to shoot the mother. So far I've resisted, but I can sympathize with those who may succumb to such temptations.

Weary
