[at-l] Frances report from Central Florida

We have had tornados all day yesterday and last night. It never really quits raining. As bands go through the rains are extremely heavy. Most people are with out power. Mine has just blinked on and off from time to time. I stayed up most of the night to keep an eye on the storm. I have a few limbs to clean up and most of my nursery trees are laying on the ground. Could have been a lot worse. Life is good.

Clyde,

What city are you in? (I'm sorry if you already said and I missed it or
forgot. I'm really tired right now too.) Anyway, Polk and Osceola counties
(a little ways south of here) seem to be getting most of the tornado
activity right now, from what I've been seeing on our local news stations.
We haven't had any Hurricane Frances related tornadoes here in Orange County
yet, I don't think. (knock on wood)

For a report of the Orlando area (so far), I would add a few dittos to most
of you said about your area, Clyde. And, having electricity and phone
service working still is a wonderful surprise for us too! Maybe I should go
ahead and bake that birthday cake I promised someone, though, in case we do
still end up losing our electricity later today. Quite a few of our
neighbors here in Orange County have been without electricity and/or phone
for hours.

By the way, we live very close to Orlando International Airport. OIA keeps
very good records of wind speed. So, based on the airport's reports, our
highest wind gusts due to Frances were approximately 69 mph. That's a lot
better than the 105 mph wind gusts that Charley threw at us. That brought
down lots of huge trees here. Of course, we were right in the eye of
Charley as it moved in a northeasterly direction through Florida. I think
that the eye of Frances stayed at least 75 miles south of us, as it moved in
a northwesterly direction across the state.

So, now I think that all we have left to worry about (from Frances, in
Orlando) are the continuing repairs to damaged structures, the widespread
power outages, a few lingering wind gusts, a bit more rain and flooding in
lower lying areas and the continuing tornado threat. So, overall, life
really is great here in Orlando too, Clyde! And, I hope that those of you
who are in the panhandle of FL will also do okay when Frances gets there
later today. It isn't expected to strengthen back to hurricane force winds
before it hits the FL panhandle, so far, but you never know.

BTW, Happy Labor Day to all. And I hope that everyone else is safe today
too. :-)

Cheryl / Swamp Blar

PS. Stay away, Hurricane Ivan!!!
