Well, I called the water cooler company and had them bring me three five
gallon thingies of water. Also, we have a big coffin sized cooler that we can
fill with ice from the restaurant. We've got a gas grill with a burner so we
got that covered. I've got a couple of frozen steaks, and other stuff that
should keep a while either in the freezer or the cooler. Gas tank is full, I
got some cash, Got a little cozy spot in an interior closet set up just in
case! The hurricane shutters go up on Friday, which I DREAD. What a chore.
The minute we finish putting them up will be the minute the hurricane turns out
in to the Atlantic.
Take care all,
Kelly

///// Well, at 7:30 this morning the Winn-Dixie nearest the University of
Central Florida (where I work)was waaaaaaay low on bottled water. I still
have plenty of food on hand from Charley, so all I bought was a couple of cans
of tuna and some deviled ham. The Winn-Dixie was completely out of batteries.
Tuesday was the last day of the one-month long repeal of an $.08/gal gas
tax, so I topped the tank. Apparently lots of other folks did too; now gas
stations all over town are out of gas and people are lining up for a
pre-hurricane top off. (After Charley, gas lines for the very few stations that had
power and gas were sometimes blocks long.)
I'm getting some cash and traveler's checks today (need the travelers checks
anyway for a planned trip West on the 11th).
I'm not buying anything I don't normally use (except some bottled water).
Tonight I'll fill every nalgene bottle I have (do those things breed in the
dark?) and freeze them. They'll help hold cold in the freezer and give us
something cold to drink as they melt.
Yesterday I gave some friends a list of stuff to buy that they could eat
when they didn't have refrigeration or power. They were astounded. Some lived
on cheese & crackers and plain canned tuna after Charley. Being backpacker
oriented also allows you to know stuff like the fact that cheese with oil
separated out is perfectly fine to eat. And that summer sausage keeps fine for
five days without refrigeration. And bagels WITH preservatives are best in
some situations. It's amazing what the uninitiated throw out.
Still hoping Frances will turn into the Atlantic,
