Earlier, Warner rode a bike for more than 15 miles with members of the Virginia Creeper Trail Club, from the trail head in Abingdon to a party in his honor at the Old Mill Restaurant in Damascus.

Following the ride, Warner expressed his admiration for the Appalachian Trail town.

Damascus "is one of the best examples where tourism has really lead to revitalization of the area," he said.

Grinning, the governor said he wished Virginia could "have a dozen Damascuses."
