The keys for AT hikers:
The overnight camping season remains the same, May 15th to Oct 15th.
The Birches is still for northbound long distance hikers only, limit 12 per 
night for first come first served by signing in at the AT Kiosk on the trail 
just inside the Park boundary, limit one night's stay only.
A chart has been created to show you the earliest you can make reservations 
for what you want, and it links from the Baxter Park homepage:

I recommend sobos stay the two nights before and after their climb at 
Katahdin Stream Campground.
AT hikers will also want to remember the recent addition of a phone-in 
reservation system, available no earlier than 10 days before you want to stay, if 
there are any openings left.
