Thanks to all for advice, links, and personal horror stories.  I had forgotten that part of Slowtoe's gangrenous adventure was exascerbated by an ingrown toenail (thankfully).  Luckily I had not read any of these posts before going on a toe-test hike to Devil's Marble Yard on Sunday.  I think my hiking boots are about the only closed-toe shoes I'd care to wear right now, since the toebox is so roomy.  My toe survived, but didn't like the rocks (lotsa rocks) or the downhills.  Back to sandals for me...
