[at-l] 2005 RUCKus a da South...

Pittsburgh here -

Let us begin discussing the 2005 Southern RUCK. Please respond with
comments and suggestions...

I am NOT putting myself out there to coordinate the event - but I will
if no one else stands up (sound familiar OB?). Camp Thornwell - where
the RUCK was held last year - is an option, assuming that Sunrise and
Sunset still manage the facility and are willing...

Having the RUCK in and around Dahlonega and the A.T. is a possibility.
There are a few youth camps in the area that can house the group, but
they all want numbers of participants and deposits. Considering that
many people decide to come at the last minute, and that keeping costs
down is important, this options really does not fit our needs...

One idea to throw out is to have an "on-the-trail,
closer-to-the-experience" RUCK. Suppose a location like Gooch Gap
(milepost 16.4 on the A.T., right on Forest Service Road 42) is chosen.
There is space for 30 of 40 tents, and other tenting (and a shelter)
within a couple miles either way on the trail. There is space for a
kitchen (camp stoves under tarps). The closest phone would be in
Suches, just a few miles away. The town of Dahlonega - with a hiker
hostel, motels and restaurants - is a dozen or so miles away. Bringing
in porta-potties and a gas generator (electricity for lighting and
presentations, etc.) are possibilities...

PROS - No cost, on the trail, good hiking, lodging and restaurants
close by (if these are desired)...

CONS - Cold weather...

Let the discussion begin...
