[at-l] Bathe your naked eyes in a meteor shower

"Bathe your naked eyes in a meteor shower"

Streaks will peak late Wednesday night, so have the caffeine ready

Hopeless romantics, insomniacs and children looking for a reason to
stay up past their bedtime, rejoice.

The annual Perseid meteor shower hits its peak this week -- and
astronomers say the show could be more visible than it's been in years.

Just a fraction of the moon will be lighted late Wednesday and early
Thursday morning as the Earth passes through the densest part of the
comet Swift-Tuttle's debris trail.

That should make it easy to see comet bits ramming into the
atmosphere, creating bright streaks of light.

The Perseids are usually one of the most reliable shows for meteor
gazers. But the past few years a full, or nearly full, moon has
limited viewings.

"The moon has been terrible," said Spencer Rackley IV, a member of the
Charlotte Amateur Astronomers Club. "(This year) the moon will be less
than 12 percent lit, and doesn't rise until 2:30 a.m. or thereabouts."
