After quadruple bypass surgery and the death of his wife, Joe Newton decided to take a hike.

>From Georgia to Connecticut, he walked with a Wichita State University baseball cap on his head and took pride in the fact that he was one of the oldest hikers on the trail this season. Next year, he plans on completing the rest of the trail into Maine.
"It's almost like belonging to a fraternity with the people who walk the trail," he says. "You make wonderful friends -- that's the best thing about the whole trip."
