MOUNT WASHINGTON, Mass. - A major land preservation deal in southeastern Massachusetts could have great implications for open space and the environment in Connecticut?s Northwest Corner, activists and officials in both states said Tuesday.

The Massachusetts chapter of The Nature Conservancy is purchasing the land, which abuts the Appalachian Trail, with help from a $1 million federal Forest Legacy grant secured by Massachusetts Congressman John Olver.

The purchase complements other southeastern Massachusetts properties protected by The Nature Conservancy and dedicated open space along the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut.

It?s located between the Mount Washington State Forest and the Mount Everett State Reservation, and is close to Appalachian Trail landmarks Sages Ravine and Bear Rock Falls.

In addition to the jet ski ban, the lease requires that the YMCA phase out the use of two-cycle boat engines in Plantain Pond and restrict the construction of tall towers, the use of herbicides and pesticides and the use of chemically treated building materials in surface waters.
