A telephone company employee who had never hiked, camped or backpacked said he got inspired when he signed up for a two-mile Appalachian Trail cleanup hike on a whim.

Roese said he hiked mostly on day trips, walking a small stretch in one day, but did cover 680 miles while backpacking and sleeping at shelters along the way. "For someone who is just doing section hiking, you don't think you're going to finish it when you start," Roese said.
